Symbolism in The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams :: The Glass Menagerie Essays
In his drama, The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams uses symbolism in order to develop multi-faceted characters and to display the recurring themes of the play. These various symbols appear throughout the entire piece, and they are usually disguised as objects or imagery. They allow the reader to know the charactersââ¬â¢ personalities, and their true inside characteristics. These symbols also add to the major themes, which develop as the play gains momentum. In the drama, symbols play the most important role. One of the most recurring symbols is the glass menagerie itself. It consists of glass animals frozen in form and it is housed at the Wingfieldââ¬â¢s apartment. The glass menagerie has a high amount of meaning for all of the characters in this play. ââ¬Å"Ultimately, the glass menagerie is symbolic of all their shattered dreams, failing to fulfill their transcendent aspirations, the Wingfields find themselves confined to a wasteland reality, their dreams become a ââ¬Ëheap of broken imagesââ¬â¢'; (Thompson 15). Just as the menagerie itself is frozen in time, the Wingfields are also. They are restricted to the one way of living that they have practiced as time had passed, so they do not know how to break free of that confinement. All the characters as a whole have tried to escape the harsh reality, but in every case they manage to fail, and in turn shatter their dreams like glass. This continuing struggle is a large part of the major theme of The Glass Menagerie. Just as the glass menagerie represents all of the characters as a whole, it also represents each character individually. ââ¬Å"Though the glass menagerie is most directly relevant to Laura, all four characters have sublimated their animal drives into esthetics. Laura has her glass animals, Tom his movies and poems, Amanda her jonquil-filled memories distorted into hopes, and Jim his baritone cliches of progress'; (Cohn 101). Though Amanda blames her children alone for relying on false illusions, she too carries this fault. Although it is obvious that the glass menagerie represents Laura because of her frailty, Tom, Amanda, and even Jim are exemplified too. They all concentrate their powers in illusions, only in different ways. More specifically, the glass menagerie unravels the character of Laura and lets the reader into her true personality. The glass menagerie ââ¬Å"embodies the fragility of Lauraââ¬â¢s world, her search for beauty; it registers sensitively changes in lighting and stands in vivid contrast to the harshness of the outer world which can (and does) shatter so easily'; (Stein 110-111).

The First Artificial Heart Transplant History was made on December 02, 1982 when Barney Clark became the first recipient of an artificial heart transplant, which was performed by the medical staff at the University of Utah Medical Center. Although Barney Clark was the center of attention, there were many events that led up to this historical moment. The development of the artificial heart began in the early 1950ââ¬â¢s. The initial prototype, developed in 1970ââ¬â¢s by the artificial developmental staff at the University of Utah, allowed 50 hours of sustained life in a sheep. Although this was called a success, the implantation of the artificial heart left the sheep in a weakened state. It wasnââ¬â¢t until late 1970ââ¬â¢s and the early 1980ââ¬â¢s where the improvement of the artificial heart actually received attention as a possible alternative to a heart transplant. The remodeled product of the early 1970ââ¬â¢s did more than just the 50 hours of sustained life; it enabled the cow to live longer and to live a relatively normal life, with the exception of a machine attached to the animal. With this improvement, Dr. Willem J. Kolff, the head of the artificial developmental program at the University of Utah, and Dr. William DeVries, the head cardiac surgeon at the University of Utah, decided to take this device further. They wanted to develop a heart based on the heart tested in farm animals, to place into a human. This was done with the help of Dr. Robert Jarvik who developed the Jarvik-7. This device was made of plastic and aluminum. With all that they had accomplished, the staff at the University of Utahââ¬â¢s artificial development program still had to wait 2 years before they found the right candidate for the project. Often, when the heart of an individual fails, the brain, the intestines, and the lungs will usually fail as well. Thus in choosing an individual, they had to find a person who only had cardiac complications and no associated organ failure. They also had to find a patient that was not eligible for a traditional heart transplant.

One of the many industrial disputes was the waterfront industrial dispute 1951. Although it was not as violent as the great strike of 1913, it lasted longer-151 days, from February 15th to July 15, and involved more workers (Scott, 2001). The 1951 dispute pitted the government and public against the Watersiders after they decided to work to rule in protest at their employersââ¬â¢ refusal to award them a 15 per cent pay rise (Kay, 2008). At its peak, 22000 waterside workers (wharfies) and other unionists were off the job out of the population of just under two million (Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Today in History, 2007). Bush is the closest presidential race the country has seen in its history. With an election this close, many controversial issues have also risen from it. There are many causes to the country's political turmoil right now and because of that, we may not know a clear-cut winner of the presidency for days, even maybe weeks. At the beginning of the night, the news broadcasters had stated that the winner of Florida would ultimately be the winner of the race. This is due to the fact that Florida can be thought as a microcosm of the United States through their demography and political views. How right they were. The race was split down the middle the whole night with Bush taking the plains and the south and Gore taking New England. Then the news came that Gore was the projected winner of Florida and the 25 electoral votes that go with it. This call was premature. As Bush's advisor had said earlier, it would be impossible to call Florida that early because of the high number of absentee ballots that Florida traditionally has. Therefore, this race has had problems very early on. Later in the night, both candidates were tied with 242 electoral votes and the only way either could win by getting to 270 was to either win Florida or all the remaining four states. The other four states did not go to one candidate and therefore, Florida would decide the election. Early the next morning, it had been reported that Bush had won Florida and he was the 43rd president of the United States. Gore then made a phone call to the Texas governor to concede the race and he then got into a "mournful motorcade" to make a concession speech. However, on the way to make his speech, his campaign manager got a phone call and Gore learned that Florida was once again too close to call. There...

This is the results to an unhealthy culture. By changing our day to day habits by incorporating healthy meal planning and exercise we can beat this growing change. As for my current fitness and nutritional habits they are improved than they were a few months past. I use to eat on the go, never work-out and essentially do what was quick, easy, and convenient. I have had some life changes which have made all this change. I am getting married in a little over four months. I have begun to plan out my weekly meals with thought and I have begun to exercise a few nights a week. I know is still need to tweak my habits a bit however, I feel as though I am heading down the correct path. : I am sure if I did not work on my health behavior I would have eventually been at a condition that would difficult to get out of. People who carry on my prior eating way of life tend become obese. Obesity is an extremely serious health concern among society today. Obesity can result to many health risk. The most common of these health risks are heart disease; which results to heart attack, congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, and chest pains. Another huge risk is the psychological and social effects obesity can have on someone. These health risk can be avoided my making simple nutritional and fitness changes. Personally for myself I can incorporate more than a few fitness habits that will improve my way of life. I have begun to work-out however; I can start to this more frequent. I currently exercise maybe one or two times weekly. My increase my exercise frequency to three to four times weekly. The more you work your body, the easy it is to adapt to new routines; in return receiving results. I currently do pretty much just cardiovascular exercise. If I were to add muscular strength endurance to my regular work-out, I could improve. These types of exercises include; sit-ups: curl-ups; pull-ups and etc. These types of exercise strengthen your body while improving your appearance as well. Another fitness habit I could incorporate for improvement would be flexibility. Including proper stretching routines before and after work-outs can improve your range of motion for your joints when exercising. Improving your nutritional habits can also prevent future health risk. The biggest challenge for me is sticking to the food pyramid; the best way to achieve this by planning all meals. I have a large amount difficulty with incorporate all the meat and fruits needed in my daily intake. With meat I am really not a huge fan of, as for fruits I truthfully am too lazy to cut them up and have them prepared for the following workday. This is something that can easily be fixed, and I will. I have also started to use the My Pyramid website that was listed in the book. This is a great tool and tracker. An even easier way to improve health is by reading labels. Reading these labels can help you to increase the nutrients that you want you and your family to eat, like calcium and fiber, and limit nutrients that can be unhealthy, like fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. I read labels for the most part to avoid ingredients for food allergies, this will be a reasonably lifestyle adjustment to improve my families health. Last, for my own personal nutrition improvement would be to add more protein to my diet. Proteins provide energy; since I am not a huge admirer of meat (one of the biggest sources of protein) I need to incorporate other items in replacement. I am not a vegetarian; I just do not like the taste of most meats. I can include more milk, cheese, eggs, beans and nuts into my diet. With making these improvements in my nutritional lifestyle I can become healthier. With the fitness and nutritional improvements listed above, not only will I be healthier I will improve and maintain my weight and health in general. Frequent exercise that includes endurance and flexibility along with current cardiovascular fitness with improve weigh, body mass and general health. While maintaining these fitness improvements along with the positive nutritional changes will also lend a hand in the weight management and an all around healthy you. This system provided a concrete transaction regarding library resources to ensure the efficiency of the process. It can offer to its borrower through providing functions that help the management to organize all the data needed in executing in the transactions like returning and borrowing of books. It has an inventory records for books for the assurance of its availability. Statement of the Problems Managing a library was definitely a hard task and had needed a lot of time especially when all the transactions were recorded manually like in Library Hub Gapan Division. A borrower should fill up a slip when borrowing and returning books in the Library Hub. Librarian or assistant librarian recorded it on the log book. In this kind of process, the borrowers experienced difficulty in finding books because there were thousand books on the list. The library management system provided the number of existing books to ensure its availability. The staff found it hard to make reports and record all transactions because they needed to update every transaction manually. Objectives General Objective The general objective of this project is to create a Library Management System for Library Hub Gapan Division. Specific Objectives Library Management System should be able to: * provide book reference and its location through a search engine function for the library staff and borrowers; * provide computerized transaction such as borrowing and returning of books; and * print book records such as borrowed, unreturned, and masters list of books. Scope and Limitation This study developed a Library Management System for Library Hub Gapan Division in Gapan Nueva Ecija. This Library System automates the basic library functions to aid in the day-to-day operations of the library. It has different type of accounts like the Administrator and User account. The system has log history, backup, and restores function. It allowed the borrowing and returning of books, as well as printing the records of returned and borrowed books. It had a reset function for account password and could change log in information if necessary. The system provided the book status such as total number of replaced, repaired, and damaged books. The system had no transaction fee or fines for the overdue borrowers. The users could not create their own account. Only the administrator has the full control in the system most especially when updating all the records. In printing of reports, sorting of record is done monthly. It is not capable of printing records with different months at the same time. CHAPTER II BACKGROUND OF THE CAPSTONE PROJECT In exploration, we find new methods, new knowledge, even develop new substances, processes or procedures, imagination and skill was employed by the developer. Today, libraries face the challenge of remaining relevant to the users. The concept of a library staying in one fixed space was slowly evolving. Observation and interview are conducted to understand the Library Hub Gapan Divisionââ¬â¢s existing system which is a manual process. When users borrow books, the staffs check all the book records to find what users need and check the bins if there are enough books to borrow. Borrowers fill up the borrowers slip to borrow books and proceed to the librarian or assistant librarian to record the transaction and to issue the books. After using the books, borrowers return the books by filling up return slip and surrendering the books to the assistant librarian. Librarian or assistant librarian records it manually in the log book. On the last day of their office hour, they tally all the transactions for the week, manually. The staffs of the library encodes the records for making reports such as the book status, returned, borrowed and master list of books. To fully understand what a Library Management System is, a research for the existing system was done. This research was used as a basis in creating a Library Management System. Ken Chad says that Library automation helps not just the library staff but also makes it easier for library users to get information quickly. Tasks such as viewing the catalogue, putting books on reserve or renewing titles can now be quickly accomplished from a computer. This give an idea that a Library Management System could help the Library Hub to do their day to day transaction, so Library Management System is created to solved the problem of Library Hub Library Management System made by Rolan Alga for Saint Vincent High School was similar to the process of Library Hub. The system of Mr. Alga has book inventory which assures the availability and number of books and compute fines for the overdue books. This allows the user to search, borrow and return book by just entering the book information needed in a specific transaction. The system also allows Printing of reports, restoring and having data back up to secure the records of the library. Tthe only difference of Library Hub to St. Vincent High School is that they donââ¬â¢t have fee or fines for the overdue books; it serves as a pattern to create a Library Management System for Library Hub. This helped a lot to decide where to start and to the interface of the system. The general functions of this proposed library system are beneficial to every school that borrow books in the Hub. It means that the intended audience for this project is not only for individual borrower, but it is also for both library and to the schools who uses the system. This system has all the book transactions needed in the Library Hub. It offers computerized transactions like borrowing, returning books, printing of book reports. CHAPTER III TECHNICAL BACKGROUND Visual Basic is Graphical Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that aims at providing the user with a graphical interface that was intuitive and easy to use. Visual Basic was a popular programming tool that can be used to write any kind of visual application ranging from a game to a database management application. It was a powerful drag and drop tool that can be used in developing project. Now-a-days Visual basic was being widely used for developing different types of applications because aside from being user-friendly, it has a wide range of support available. Using My Structured Query Language (MySQL) for the back end, with Visual Basic 6. 0 they were known to be a dynamic duo. MySQL was pronounced either My S-Q-L or My Sequel, was an open source relational database management system. MySQL offers secured data basing which make it popular to public. Aside from being secured, MySQL was open source software, user-friendly and also has a wide range of support available. The Operating System will serve as the most important software application that will be used. An operating system (sometimes abbreviated as OS) was the program that, after being initially loaded into the computer by a boot program, manages all the other programs in a computer. The application programs make use of the operating system by making requests for services through a defined Application Program Interface (API). In addition, users can interact directly with the operating system through a user interface such as a command language or a graphical user interface (GUI). Computers are needed to develop the project and the available computer that was being used has the specification of 2 gigabyte RAM, 320 gigabyte hard disk drive, Intel core duo for processor and other peripherals such as mouse. The operating system used in developing the project is Windows 7 Ultimate. The Library Management System of Library Hub Gapan Division used four (4) computers in implementing the project. To establish connection to these computers, the topology used to network the computers is star topology which uses hub to connect all those computers. Two (2) of these computers was used by the Administrator, one will be used by the Librarian and the other one was for the Assistant librarian who was in charged of updating and monitoring all the transactions in the library. The other two (2) computers were used by the borrower in searching the books they want and in filling on the computerized slip for borrowing and returning books. CHAPTER IV METHODOLOGY Locale of the Study The proposed Library Management System was for Library Hub Gapan Division located at Gapan, Nueva Ecija. The proposed Library System of Library Hub Gapan Division was beneficial to thirty-three (33) Elementary Schools and seven (7) High Schools with approximately 10,000 students. Organizational Chart LIBRARY HUB GAPAN DIVISION HIGH SCHOOL ELEMENTARY Figure 1. 0 School under Library Hub Gapan Division Library Hub Gapan Divison was a library facility under Department of Education that allows all the schools in Gapan to borrow all the resources of the books available in the library. The schools as shown in Figure 1. 0 were under the Library Hub which are composed of elementary schools and high schools in Gapan Nueva Ecija . Requirements Specification The interview and observation to the client are conducted to understand what are needed to be done in this project. The client was consulted regarding to the process and problems they encountered, what were the functions needed for the project to be very useful to them. The Library Hub is in need of a Library Management System to solve their problems which made their manual process to a computerized one. Based on the interview conducted, this Library Management System shall have the functions of borrowing, returning of books, adding of accounts and books, updating accounts and book records, printing of records, and search functions for finding books. Four (4) computers were used in the implementation of the system and these computers were networked using a hub. In developing the project, the developer started to build the system part by part. He used Visual Basic 6. 0 where designing of system interface and program coding takes place. The developer started to build the system with the log in form which was basically needed to access the system. After dealing with log in, creating the account panels was done that allow the administrator to add new accounts and update the existing records. The next function was book panel where adding and updating of book records are the main concern. Adding and updating of the main records were done, borrowing and returning of books were possible. The developer dealt with borrowed and returned books. The developer placed a confirmation request when borrowing books and this request needs to be confirmed by the administrator. After those functions, the developer started working on inventory which displays the masters list, borrowed and unreturned books. This inventory also displayed the availability of the books. Those records are printable so that making reports would be easier. After the main functions of the system were done, the developer focused on the minor functions such as; (1)search engine which make finding book easy over a list consisting of thousand books, (2)security/ pop-up message, (3)system interface and others. These functions were made especially for Library Hub Gapan Division to assist them in their day to day operation. Requirements Different methods are useful to understand what must be done and what to satisfy the client needs. One of these methods is requirements modelling which was subdivided into different five processes. INPUT -Conduct an interview to the target client. Gathers information that will be needed in the project Review the information and process of the manual library. PROCESS Analyze all the information gathers Transform all the information gathers in input stage OUTPUT The result of this project is the Library Management System for Library Hub Gapan Division PERFORMANCE -It can add book records and accounts for the borrowerà -it supports three (3) different type of users -it support saving, updating and printing of library records -keep track all the records of the borrowers CONTROL -The system has a log-in form to provide security. -Creating new user account is done only by the Administrator -It has a two-user level access; the Administrator which is sub-divided into two the one is for librarian and the other one is for assistant librarian. The user (borrowers) is the second type of user level. The developer decided to make a library management system for the client after conducting an interview. This library management system replaced paper and pens in recording data transaction because it computerized the process in which they used computers in making those transactions. Having the Library Management System resulted to an output which serves as the third process. As an OUTPUT, the schools were able to borrow, return and make inventory reports easier than performing it manually. They searched and chose books by just clicking and scrolling. The system also helped the librarian and other staff in recording all the transactions and making good inventory. The fourth method of requirements modelling is PERFORMANCE. In this method, the system can identify how the transaction of the library system has been done. It proved how the system can satisfy the needs of the clients. It keeps all the records of the borrowers of the book tracked. Transactions include borrowing and returning books. CONTROL is the last process wherein the librarian served as the Administrator of this project that holds the full access in the system. Assistant Librarian helped the Librarian to monitor and update the system. The school representative that borrowed books are entered all the necessary data in borrowing and returning books. The Figure 3 shows the flow of data in the system. The Administrators can update accounts and book records directly in the system. Through the system, they can borrow and return books, generate computerized books reports as well as printing of book records was all possible. The system also provides book records that used by the borrowers in searching, borrowing and returning books in the system. When the Administrator log in to the system, it can create account for the borrowers and update these accounts that are saved from the same database table. After having account, adding of books and update record are can be done and saved in the database table allbooks . These records are can be viewed by all type of accounts which used in borrowing books. When they borrow books a request will send that needs to be confirmed by the administrator and this request can serves as a reservation request. If the request were finally confirmed by the admin it saves to the database table borrowedbooks. In returning books, the data in the table borrowedbooks is being retrieved for it to be returned and this was save into the database table returnedbooks with the date returned. For every borrowed books, this were automatically subtracted to the total number of books in the database and when the books was returned the number of books borrowed were added to the total number of books. The Administrator can print the records on database tables borrowed, returned and allbooks for the reports of the library. This type of account was capable of viewing all the available books in the Library. User account can search for a specific book to locate, view its availability and information. In borrowing books, the user will fill up the computerized borrower slip and wait for the administratorââ¬â¢s confirmation to validate the borrowerââ¬â¢s request. Network Topology A network topology describes the arrangement of systems on a computer network. It defines how the computers, or nodes, within the network are arranged and connected to each other. Figure 12. 0 Network Topology for Library Management System The topology used in the implementation of the project was star topology which fit to the situation because this topology was a server based network. The system needed a server and client computers to be more effective. To establish connection between the computers, hub was used. The server was placed on the table of Head Librarian and Assistant Librarian. When the client preferred to use one server for the librarian or the administrator, one computer for the assistant librarian and two computers for the libraries client, star topology is used to establish connection to the computers will be used. Programming Environment Front End Microsoft Visual Basic 6. 0 serves as the front-end in developing this project. This is the marginal tool that used to create this Library Management System. Visual Basic (VB) is a programming environment which was called the drag and drop tool because it contains built in tools like the buttons. The proponent decided to use this drag-and-drop buttons on the window directly to the form to design its interface and code the data structures of the proposed system because Visual basic is user-friendly and has a wide support in both text books and in the web. The front end serves as a tool for creating the different forms and interface of the Library Management System. Back End MySQL serves as the back-end in developing this project. This serves as the data storage of all the information needed to be recorded in the database. MySQL is very fast reliable and flexible Database Management System. MySQL serve as data or record storage of all the transaction of the Library Management System. For every transactions made in the system, data will be saved on the different database table. This database table is where all of the information is stored and retrieved in its operation. To make those database tables, the proponent used WAMP server which has PHPMyAdmin that allows creating and managing the database. It uses a web browser to access it features and manipulate records. Testing In the development of every project, the developer must not commit any shortcomings, problems and/or mistakes. One of the best ways to avoid problems was through conducting a system testing where in it assesses the system. This helped the project to improve and meet its objective. The twenty (20) individual was asked to test the project through an evaluation instrument provided. The developer tested the whole system if bugs exist. If bugs are present, the developer fixed it and makes another test until thereââ¬â¢s no trace of errors. After the developer test the system, he asked at least seven (7) IT students to test the system because they have knowledge in this field, at least seven (7) individuals which has a course outside or not related to information technology to ensure its simplicity and understandability. One (1) Head Librarian, one (1) Department of Education official in Gapan and two (2) Assistant Librarian because they were the one who used the system and to get suggestions to improve system functionalities. The evaluation instrument was used to determine what to change and what to add on the system. Lastly, two (2) member of IEAT faculty assessed the whole system and determined the systemââ¬â¢s performance. The Head Librarian from the Library Hub, Department of Education official and the proponent from IEAT faculty used the administrator account to evaluate the system; the assistant librarian used the intended account for them which will be the Administrator 2. And the other respondent used the user/borrower account. In short, twenty (20) respondents are asked to test and assess the system. Evaluation instrument guided/helped the proponent to test the whole system. This helped a lot to evaluate the system for Library Hub. This was trial and error basis, when the respondent find errors/bugs on every question, it must fixed the errors first. The developer: 1. Set evaluation instrument and set the units used in the system evaluation and testing. The developer networked the units used. 2. Discussed first all the function of the system and all the information needed to use the system. 3. Actual demonstration on how to use the system by using its every single function. 4. Assist the respondent when they test and evaluate the system. 5. Asked every respondent for their suggestions to make the system perform it full potential. 6. Analysed every suggestions comment and then apply the one that will make the system better. After the system had been assess through the provided evaluation instruments, answers and suggestions have been summarized. Those useful comments and suggestions were applied. Through this evaluation the system performed its function to its full potential. After these changes, the developer ensured that the changes made are seen by the respondent to check if it is correct and satisfy them. Through the use of Evaluation Instrument to test and assess the system, data are collected data were analysed to interpret the result of the system evaluation. The evaluation of the system used three (3) sets of evaluation questionnaires that use the different account level which were the account of Head Librarian, Assistant Librarian and Borrowers that had been summarized to use in analysing the results.

How Effective Is The Criminal Justice System Criminology Essay This essay is going to critically analyse and explore how female offenders are dealt with across the Criminal Justice System (CJS) focussing on different agencies including how they are dealt with in custody, in prison, and also the mental health of female offenders and how theyre needs are or arent met. I will also be looking into the history of the female offender and draw upon different theorists ideas as to why they offend and also if they are inherently different to their male counterparts. The way in which female offenders are treated has evolved quite considerably over time. Many centuries ago the female criminal was seen as being mad and bad because they were subjected to double deviancy in that not only were they going against their perceived biological role, but also because they were committing an offence, therefore making them a criminal. When faced with this, women are not only punished by the CJS but also by friends, family and society in general. Female criminals have been consistently portrayed down the ages as peculiarly evil and depraved, and as unstable and irrational. Often their irrationality is linked to their biological and their psychological nature. Paradoxically, they have been depicted as unfeminine and hence unnatural (Lombroso and Ferroro 1895) or all too feminine (Pollak 1950 in Carlen and Worrall :18). Women, like men, are dealt with by many different agencies in the Criminal Justice System, but is there any difference in treatment between the genders? This is an important aspect to consider when analysing the effectiveness of how female offenders are dealt with. Much research has been done into the difference of treatment between genders when being dealt with by different agencies within the Criminal Justice System (CJS). It has been said that women are treated more leniently by the CJS compared to men. One of the reasons suggested for this is because women are said to captivate men thus ensuring them more lenient treatment. Police also see women as less of a threat than men which is said to be another reason why they get treated more leniently and also are less likely to be sentenced for their crimes. Police have been accused of having a sexist attitude towards dealing with female offenders and are reluctant and unhelpful when it comes to cases of women in refuges. One question that has always attracted a lot of interest is the reasons as to why women offend. There are numerous and complex reasons as to why women commit crime. Rumgay (1996) argues that the backgrounds and circumstances of womens lives are inseparable from their involvement in crime (Gelsthorpe 2002b:290). The factors included for female offending are, poverty, addiction, prostitution, abuse and unemployment to name a few. (A) high proportion (of women in the CJS) are lone mothers. Many have lived on state benefits, few have been in paid employment, many have large debts, one in ten will have experienced homelessness and two in five will have experienced foster or other state care prior to imprisonment (Fawcett Society 2004: McIvor 2004; Carlen 2002 in Gelsthorpe et al 2007:13). More female offenders than male offenders have been a victim of sexual or emotional abuse prior to their imprisonment. This can have a profound effect on a womans time spent in prison as they will have t o deal with authority from male prison officers which could have an impact on their mental health although not a lot has been written about male prison officers working in female prisons. Strip searching in female prisons is also something to consider when discussing the emotional impacts prison life has on female offenders as Corsten (2007:8) states the regular, repetitive, unnecessary overuse of strip searching in womens prisons (to be) humiliating, degrading and undignified and a dreadful invasion of privacy. For women who have suffered a past of sexual abuse it is an appalling introduction to prison life and an unwelcome reminder of previous victimisation (Corston 2007:8). It is important to note that experience of abuse does not excuse women of their criminality but it does mean they have different needs from men in the CJS and a different approach to their criminality is required, (Corston 2007:20). The prison system has come under a lot of criticism in recent years for appare ntly failing to effectively deal with the needs of these women. Far more female offenders suffer from mental health problems than their male counterparts and this is something that is not being dealt with effectively enough in female prisons, two thirds of women in prison are suffering from some sort of mental disorder (Wilson 2005:49). It has also been said that staff in female prisons are lacking essential skills and also that the prisons are under resourced. Research has suggested that mental health problems increase whilst a woman is imprisoned. Liebling (1994) states that women tend not to riot or exert violence in prison when distressed, but they are far more likely to self-harm or attempt suicide as an outlet. This is said to be the reason why rates of attempted suicide and self inflicted death are significantly high in female prisons. A study which was conducted by the Safer Custody Group (SCG) discovered that females in prison are forty times more likely to kill themselves and eighteen more times likely to self harm than women in the com munity (Rickford 2003). He also goes on to say despite the best efforts of individual staff and despite the initiatives of the SCG, overcrowding undermines the ability of the Prison Service to provide a decent, safe environment in which women are less at risk of self harming (Rickford 2003:15). In order to understand the extremity of mental health problems in female prisons the SCMH explains: Prisons are overcrowded and lack staff skilled in dealing with mental health problems. There is also a high degree of co-morbidity among prisoners; some have a combination of mental health problems, substance misuse, personality disorder or learning difficulties (2006:1). There is much speculation surrounding the legal framework surrounding mental health in prison and is slightly hazy. Prisons, even their health care wings are not recognised as hospitals under the Mental Health Act 1983 (SCMH 2006:7). This is another indication that the mental health needs of female prisoners are not being met. The Human Rights Act of 1998 came into force in October 2000 stating that the Prison Service has an obligation to protect people in its care. Article 2 states Everyones right to life shall be protected (Rickford 2003:32). Other factors affecting women in prison is the fact that they are far more less likely to have a partner on the outside looking after their children, elderly family members or children, and almost 40% lose their home whilst imprisoned (Women in Prison 2006 in Hayes 2007:188). This is very significant when discussing this because over half of women in prison are mothers with dependent children. Carlen Worrall (2004:37) discuss that while 90% of fathers in prison expect their children to be cared for by the childrens mother, only about 25% of mothers in prison expect their children to be cared for by the childrens father (Home Office 2002a). As a result of this, over 18000 children a year are taken into care (Corston 2007). Because there are far less female prisons compared to male prisons, women are more likely to be far away from home. This could mean that they dont see their family as much as they would like or need to. Travelling to and from prison is costly especially to those who are from low income families. Not only are mothers not seeing their children regularly but it also could have a negative effect on the relationship between a mother and her children thus breaking down the bond they once shared. All these factors could only add to a woman already struggling with mental health problems. Research by HMP Holloway, London, showed that only 35% of a sample of prisoners on reception were from London. The majority were from Sussex and Hampshire with some from Devon, Dorset and Cornwall; 5% were from the Midlands. A third of the Holloway population surveyed by the Chief Inspector had not received a visit from family or friends throughout their sentence (HMP Holloway 2000 in Rickford 2003). If the children of these female offenders re taken into local authority care, the local authority has to fund the childrens transport to prison thus resulting in a greater social cost.

I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something." -Graham from the Motion Picture Crash (2005) This quote refers to the diversity in Los Angeles and how people put up personal barriers and are hesitant to trust others. Crash is a movie that really gets people to look at their own prejudices and to the roots of their morality by showing the hidden racism and prejudices that are very present in our society and even in ourselves today. If this movie were to be summarized in one sentence, one may say that no matter who you are, everybody holds preconceptions and stereotypes against other people. For example, in this movie, an upper-class white woman sees two black men so she clings to her husband, showing she is scared of them. Even though this woman had no idea who they were, she still jumped to a conclusion that they were going to harm her because of the color of their skin. This movie takes place in Los Angeles and is about racial conflicts within a group of people which occur in a series of events. Since there are a wide variety of characters in this movie, it can be confusing to the viewer. In the plot, Graham is an African-American detective whose younger brother is a criminal. His mother cares more about his brother than Graham and she wants Graham to bring his brother back home, which in turn hurts Graham. Graham?s partner Ria is a Hispanic woman who comes to find that her and Graham?s ethnicities conflict when she had sex with him. Rick is the Los Angeles district attorney who is also op... ...cause of the conflict, as the shop owner continues the conflict with a number of stereotypes and racist remarks regarding Farhad?s race. We crash constantly. We crash into the cultures and lives of those that surround us in our society. We judge because we do not know or unwilling to understand the differences that surround us. The director wants the audience to make an unfair judgment on Officer Ryan because of he inappropriately searches Christine, however, as the movie progresses our judgments crashes as we begin to identify with Officer Ryan. When Graham states ?We are always behind metal and glass,? it is not the metal and glass we are behind, but the fear of understanding and trusting someone that is different from us. This fear is where our preconceived notions and racist habits come from. It is the fear of trusting that in which can cause us to crash.

(Adidas AG[a], 2007) As predicted, the main problem facing adidas is adeptly managing a brand portfolio especially with two highly similar brands and product offerings.On the other hand, Adidas is currently launching a new promotional campaign based on the 2008 Olympics which has the potential to increase Reebokââ¬â¢s presence in the Asian market and revive its faltering sales performance. Clearly, Adidasââ¬â¢ Olympics themed promotional campaign is bound to have a positive impact in raising the companyââ¬â¢s brand equity especially in the A sian market. Undoubtedly, the Adidas Olympics campaign is a significant part of adidasââ¬â¢ global strategy of penetrating and dominating the Asian market.This strategy is primarily targeted at capturing a significant market share by ensuring adidasââ¬â¢ presence and leadership in China, which is Asiaââ¬â¢s biggest market. As the official sponsor of the Olympics in China, adidas is able to communicate to the Asian market the companyââ¬â¢s corporate values of ââ¬Å"a passion for sports and a sporting lifestyle. â⬠(Adidas AG[a], 2007) According to the company, the Olympic Games campaign with the rallying cry ââ¬Å"Together in 2008, Impossible is Nothingâ⬠is ââ¬Å"about rallying the nation and showing how the entire Chinese nation is supporting their athletes and the Games themselves.â⬠(Adidas AG[b], 2007) Likewise, the Olympic campaign builds on Adidasââ¬â¢ earlier brand motto, ââ¬Å"United by Sportâ⬠which reflects the companyââ¬â¢s sporti ng culture. In this aspect, Adidas has an advantage over its rivals, particularly Nike, as adidasââ¬â¢ sponsorship of the Beijing Olympics not only associates the company with the symbolic meanings of sports and the Olympic Games but also complements Adidasââ¬â¢ forward integration strategy through the presence of 4000 adidas retail stores in China.(The China Business Network, 2008) Hatch & Schultz (2001) note, for instance, that brand success is determined by the strategic alignment between company image, vision, and culture. (p. 5) Adidasââ¬â¢ participation in the Beijing Olympics guarantee a higher level of exposure and promotion of adidas retail outlets, while at the same time reinforcing adidasââ¬â¢ favorable image for Chinese and other Asian consumers. Meanwhile the primary threats to the success of adidasââ¬â¢ Olympics campaign are guerilla marketing tactics of rival companies and the controversies that prominent brands often attract from their participation in highly publicized events.Svetlicic & Vial (2008) observe, for instance, that ââ¬Å"although Adidas is the official TOP sponsor for the 2008 Olympic Games, 22 of Chinaââ¬â¢s 28 teams will be wearing Nike during their athletic performances. â⬠(p. 19) Hence, adidasââ¬â¢ most stringent rival may be employing a more cost-effective way of branding the Olympics through direct athlete sponsorships. Likewise, Wagner (2008) warns that ââ¬Å"the sponsors of the Beijing Olympics are pursuing a risky, double-pronged strategyâ⬠by highlighting their presence in the games with Chinese consumers while downplaying this in the West.However, adidasââ¬â¢ Olympics sponsorships may be able to hurdle these challenges. For instance, Nikeââ¬â¢s guerilla marketing tactics may backfire among Asian consumers who might interpret Nikeââ¬â¢s branding efforts vis-a-vis its refusal to sponsor the Olympics as insincere and cheap. In contrast, sponsoring the Olympics differentiates Adidas culture and image from its rival Nike, as it could be seen as a sign of the companyââ¬â¢s commitment to sports. Likewise, adidas does not have the same baggage that Nike has in terms of being embarassingly associated with sweatshop labor, which could insulate it from controversies.Thus, it is clear that Adidasââ¬â¢ Olympic Games Campaign will succeed in establishing the company as the sporting goods leader not only in China but in the Asian market.
